“Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.” Pablo Picasso
“The hardest part of being creative is getting started.” No Blue Hair
Yes, I am an inveterate procrastinator and avoider. I tell myself each day that this is the day I write a post or a poem, draw a picture or paint or post. Most days, I don’t.
But there are several bloggers who are creative each and every day. And they also write about it to inspire others. Sometimes, they even move me to act. But they always move me.
So, on this hot, muggy day when the coolest place to be in in one of the few air conditioned rooms in my house, I am putting my butt in the seat and sharing some of my favorite creativity bloggers in hopes it inspires you to follow your own muse. Or simply feel creative reading about the creative lives of others.
The Muse is In by Jill Badonsky. I discovered this artist during Covid when she offered online drawing with watercolor classes. Jill’s a free spirit and her approach to drawing and writing are equally free-spirited and delightful. In fact, my icon for this blog was done during one of Jill’s classes. Check out a class, a workshop, her books or just subscribe to her blog for inspiration.
Flying Edna by Brian Andreas and Fia Skye. I’ve been a fan of Brian Andreas for years. His whimsical drawings with tiny stories stole my heart and I have several of his books and have given them as gifts. Each day, they send post promoting one of their illustrations to enjoy without purchase. Of course, you can also buy them or their annual, life-affirming calendar.
Austin Kleon is a writer/artist and bestselling author of Steal Like An Artist and his newest Don’t Call it Art. If you want a weekly dose of inspiration for your life as well as your creativity, sign up for his free newsletter that offers “Ten things worth sharing this week.” I often get movie and music ideas from his eclectic collection. And Steal Like an Artist is full of wit and wisdom for the creative avoider.
The Isolation Journals by Suleika Jaouad. Despite bouts of leukemia, Suleika has been a ferocious writer and journal keeper. Thousands of people have bought her guide The Book of Alchemy and joined her writing and blogging community. She is a warrior for creativity which has sustained her through deep medical crises. You can subscribe for free and decide if her weekly newsletter is enough or you want to join her community and go deeper. As she writes on her home page: “I believe a creative life is for everyone.”
I hope these creative souls inspire your own. I can truly say that today I wrote something worth sharing. And dang, that feels good.
What are creative blocks and how do you overcome them? I welcome your thoughts on this and any blogs that light your own fire.
